To increase safety the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate (Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport) performs preliminary investigations of marine accidents and injuries of seafarers on seagoing vessels. Marine accidents include collisions, labour related accidents on board, groundings, fire, capsizing, et cetera. After receiving a report of a marine accident, a preliminary investigation is  conducted.
 
Reporting accidents
Marine accidents like collisions, groundings, fire, capsizing, et cetera should be reported  to the Inspectorate immediately. This can be done bij telephone: +31 (0)88 489 00 00 or by fax +31 (0)10 202 35 20.

Reporting of labour related accidents 
The employer must report labour related accidents at the Inspectorate if they lead to :

  • death;
  • permanent injury;
  • hospitalization.       

The obligation to report labour related accidents is  in compliance with article 9 of the  Labour Act.
